Banning of Headscarves in Europe

The Muslim Women's League is disheartened by the recent ruling of the European Court of Human Rights to uphold the banning of Muslim headscarves in state schools.  This ruling will be applied to the 25 countries belonging to the European Union.

The "hijab" or headscarf in Islam is a symbol of modesty.  This is not a new concept in the historical context of religion whether we talk about Judaism or Christianity.  The orthodox Jewish women wear a head covering as well and the nuns in Christianity wear a head covering know as the "habit."  Modesty is a value that is upheld in all three of these religions.  It is hypocritical to ban the Muslim women from wearing the headscarf when women from other religions are free to wear their religious garb.

The Quran (the Holy Book for Muslims) was revealed to humanity at large as a confirmation of the previous religions Judaism and Christianity and to emphasize the importance of the Oneness of God (the monotheistic aspect of religion) and to guide mankind to working deeds of righteousness as well as admonishing us to treat each other in the best possible manner.  This would represent the fundamentals of Islam.
